The Honolulu Museum of Art is a cultural and historical icon in Hawai‘i—from the world’s most extensive Pacific Island art collection to offering 175 outreach and community programs. We created a site that lives up to their mantra: “Come Be Inspired.”

Strategy

Crafting an iconic story

The Honolulu Museum of Art is one of Hawai‘i’s most revered cultural icons. With over 700,000 yearly visitors interacting with three, beautiful properties, countless works of art, and hundreds of outreach classes it was vitally important that we create an experience that would deliver an intuitive, functional workflow, and an immersive, visual motif.

Product Design

Defining a language and experience

Interacting with museum properties is a sensory explosion of color, texture, and architecture that sets a bright tone for how visitors will engage with the exhibitions and events. Using this as inspiration, we established three guiding principles for what users should experience when engaging with the new experience: intrigued, informed, enabled. Immediately we looked towards solutions that would feel immersive without competing against the art. And defined an information architecture that would be intimate yet discoverable. Ensuring vital functions like donations, class schedules, and event calendars could be easily accessed. While elements like exploring the collection and browsing exhibitions could be rich and strung together.
